SOLIDWORKS Inspection is a powerful tool used to generate First Article Inspection (FAI) reports from engineering drawings. However, sometimes the software may struggle to recognize certain text formats. In such cases, you can customize the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) dictionary by manually adding characters that the software fails to identify.

In this blog, we will walk through the process of creating and setting up a custom OCR dictionary in SOLIDWORKS Inspection.
Step 1: Open the OCR Editor

  • Launch SOLIDWORKS Inspection (Standalone Version).
  • Navigate to the File menu.
  • Within the File menu, select OCR Editor.

Step 2: Define Characters in the Dictionary

  • Once the OCR Editor is open, you can define characters in the dictionary format.
  • The OCR Editor, located in the Command Manager, provides an option to add your drawing file.
  • Upload the drawing file that contains unrecognized characters.

  • You have two options to define characters:
    • Manual Extraction – Manually input the unrecognized characters.
    • Auto Extraction – This allows the software to detect and extract the characters automatically.

  • Assign the correct values to the extracted characters.
  • After defining the required characters, specify the dictionary location and save the file.

Step 3: Apply the Custom OCR Dictionary

  • Close the OCR Editor and return to the SOLIDWORKS Inspection application.
  • Go to Settings and Options.
  • Navigate to Project Options > OCR Settings.
  • In the OCR settings, select Custom OCR.
  • Click Add and specify the directory where the custom OCR dictionary is saved.

  • Once set, you are ready to capture and recognize custom characters in your drawings.
