What is One-way Fluid – Structure Interaction?

A one-way FSI is when fluid exerts forces on a rigid or slightly deformable structure, causing it to move or bend at the same time this movement will not cause any effect on the fluid flow.

Why 3DEXPERIENCE SIMULIA?

3DEXPERIENCE platform is a complete suite of solutions where the CAD (SOLIDWORKS) is connected into FEA and CFD Solutions (SIMULIA) through the PLM connectors. This allows the engineer/analyst to update the designs as per the needs with lesser turnaround times.

Now, let us have a look at an example of one-way FSI on a tower block.

The tower block model has been modelled using SOLIDWORKS CAD and saved into 3DEXPERIENCE for the analysis.

To perform FSI, initial set up and analysis must be completed in CFD Analysis tool i.e., Fluid Dynamics Engineer role (FMK Role) FMK can be launched through the compass from the SOLIDWORKS Window itself and the analysis is set up with the following details.

The analysis was set up as an external aerodynamics, with the tower being grounded and the Air has been used as a fluid medium to compute the pressure on the tower. The transient analysis of 5 seconds has been set.

The Air is travelling at a velocity of 25 m/s at the inlet and has a pressure outlet on the other side for the air to exit.

Now, the most important part is creating a Port Region that connects CFD and FEA solvers and shares the output of CFD as an input for FEA analysis.

All the faces of the tower intact with the fluid medium are defined as port region as shown below.

An output request has been raised on the pressure field using this Port Region and these are the values that are transferred to FEA analysis.

The simulation is set to run using cloud computation and the following are the results from CFD analysis Velocity and Guage Pressure.

The next part of analysis is performed by using FEA Solution i.e., Structural Mechanics Engineer Role (SSU Role).

The analysis setup has been done through a Linear Static Analysis and the Hex mesh elements have been used for meshing and 1023 Carbon Steel is used as the material property for the tower block.

The base of the tower is fixed on the ground and the Pressure value has been fetched the CFD analysis and the last timestep of 5 second has been considered as the input for the pressure in FEA analysis.

This set up has been set to run using cloud computation and the following results are obtained.

The following are the stress and displacement results of FSI.

This way FSI can help the designers and analysts in understanding the performance of the product under variable conditions connecting CFD and FEA solvers. Not only the fluidic pressure, but also the temperatures from the CFD analysis can be transferred to the FEA solver to understand the thermos-structural behavior of the product under given circumstances.
